Winter charity appeal to help kids in Lewisham this Christmas

By Ella Hopkins

A winter charity appeal has been launched for vulnerable children and teenagers.

Donations will go towards toys, gift vouchers, books and festive treats for Christmas.

Funds will support two Lewisham charities, the 999 Club and Voluntary Services Lewisham. The 999 Club helps people experiencing homelessness and Voluntary Services Lewisham has raised money over Christmas for vulnerable children for over 50 years.

A £5 donation will buy a stocking gift for a vulnerable child in Lewisham, while a £15 donation will go to a present or gift voucher for a child or teenager.

Chief Executive of Voluntary Services Lewisham Melissa Tettey, said: “VSL are delighted that the Mayor has chosen to support us alongside the 999 Club as one of his charities for 2020.”

“We aim to spread a little festive cheer at what can be a difficult time for those who may be experiencing financial hardship, and or social isolation.”

Lewisham mayor Damien Egan, who launched the campaign, said: “This year has been an incredibly tough year for everyone. This winter I’m raising money for Voluntary Services Lewisham and the 999 Club, two incredible charities, to support vulnerable children and homeless people in Lewisham.”

“I know how incredibly generous Lewisham residents are and by giving a small donation you will be able to provide a gift to vulnerable children and those in care or support people experiencing homelessness this winter.”
