Crystal Palace 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur – Jeffrey Schlupp goal denies Spurs victory at Selhurst Park
BY SAM SMITH
Jeffrey Schlupp cancelled out a Harry Kane goal for the second successive fixture between Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur.
Kane put Spurs ahead with a swerving effort midway through the first half – with Vicente Guaita questioned for not keeping it out.
But Palace piled pressure on their visitors in the second half and grabbed a deserved equaliser through Schlupp. It was exactly how the meeting between these two sides played out on the final day of last season.
Despite his error, Palace relied on Guaita’s heroics to earn them a point. the Spaniard made an excellent early save to keep out Tanguy Ndombele. He then prevented a Kane header from a corner with a strong parry.
But Kane soon opened the scoring. The England captain’s dipping effort changed course through the air and wrong-footed Guaita, and the ball squirmed through his grasp.
The Eagles threatened in attack and Wilfried Zaha tested Hugo Lloris from outside the box. Eberechi Eze struck the foot of the post slightly prior to half-time.
Roy Hodgson’s side were dominant in the second half and had several chances to draw level. Christian Benteke headed over from a free-kick before nodding another effort straight at Lloris from inside the six-yard box.
Schlupp misfired from a similar range but soon made up for his miss. Eze’s free-kick was spilled by Lloris and the Ghanaian prodded the rebound into the net.
But Palace required Guaita to secure the point at the end. The Spaniard made an incredible stop to deny a Kane header – diving quickly and low to his left to keep out a header. He then tipped an Eric Dier free-kick on to the crossbar.
