Eating disorder charity launches services for carers in South East London after 233% rise in demand

A charity has launched new services in South East London to help carers supporting people with eating disorders.

The number of people contacting Beat for support has more than tripled from 2020 to 2021 compared to the previous year.

The organisation has launched a telephone coaching service and a zoom peer support group.

In the telephone service, carers will work with a trained advisor.

They will have a safe space to talk through their experiences and discover techniques to help their loved one towards recovery.

One user of the telephone service said: “We were desperately worried about our daughter who has anorexia before I started Beat’s sessions.

“After their gentle guidance and support I now feel emotionally and physically able to support our daughter.

“The impact of what I have learned has meant a significant improvement in our communication and relationship.”

In the support groups carers can connect with each other and find empathy from people in similar situations.

All sessions are facilitated by an eating disorder specialist, but carers lead the discussion.

South London residents who are currently caring for a loved one with an eating disorder can now contact their GP, who should refer them directly to Beat’s new services.

Beat’s Director of Services, Caroline Price, says: “Thousands of people with loved ones with eating disorders have been reaching out to us during the pandemic, and it has been a time of upheaval, stress and unpredictability for many.

“Caring for somebody with an eating disorder can be an isolating and confusing experience, and it is important that carers also look after their own mental health. Our advisors provide specialist guidance based on each person’s specific situations, such as how to set boundaries at home and support people with meal plans.

“We are delighted to be expanding our services in London to better support carers across the region, and would encourage anybody caring for a loved one to reach out to us and get the support that they need.”
