Remembering victims of the London Bridge terror attack
A memorial plaque has been erected following a commemorative service to remember the victims of the London Bridge terror attack five years ago. Friday June 3, 2022, marked five years since the attacks which saw eight people killed and 48 people injured.
A service of commemoration took place at Southwark Cathedral, which included the blessing of the memorial plaque, and flowers were laid by the families of those killed.
The new memorial plaque was unveiled at Cathedral Square, and dedicated as a permanent record of the tragedy. The commemoration was followed by an interfaith tea at Harper Road Mosque and served as an opportunity of quiet reflection including prayers in solidarity with all faiths and those of no particular faith.
Speaking on the anniversary of the attacks, Amir Eden, who witnessed the attacks and is a Borough Market resident as well as executive chairman of community group Living Bankside said: “The London Bridge Attacks remain fresh and sensitive in my mind and all those who were affected that evening.
“The fifth anniversary was an important day of remembrance and commemoration of those killed, injured and traumatised. “The terrorists utterly failed in what they hoped to achieve as we committed ourselves to hope over fear, compassion over hatred and unity over division.”
On June 25, Living Bankside will host The Great Get Together Bankside, a community festival to be held throughout Borough Market. The event is part of a nationwide series of events inspired by the late Jo Cox MP, who was murdered by a far-right extremist in 2016, and her famous quote that “we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us”.
Mr Eden said: “The community’s commitment to these positive values has been more than just words but in our actions – through events and activities which improve and enhance togetherness such as the Annual Southwark Grand Iftar with Southwark Cathedral and The Great Get Together Bankside with the Jo Cox Foundation.”
