Dons boss Jackson pleased with 2-0 win to kick off their pre-season friendly programme

AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson was pleased to see his side kick off their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 win against non-league opposition Bedford Town.

Both goals came in the first half at the New Eyrie, with Luke McCormick opening the scoring and Zach Robinson doubling the lead.

The first-half side named by Jackson included Nik Tzanev, Jack Currie, Alfie Bendle, Ethan Chislett and new signing Alex Pearce.

The 39-year-old boss handed minutes to George Marsh, Lee Brown, Nathan Broome, Paul Kalambayi and Aaron Cosgrave in the second half.

Two trialists took part in the game for the Dons.

“I’m really pleased – [it was a] really good day,” Jackson told Wimbledon’s official site. “Good performance and a good 45 minutes in the legs for all the players.

“It was a really good workout with lots of stuff that we have been working on in the past couple of weeks that we have been back showing on the pitch.

“Lots to work on still, but it was a really good exercise today. It was really important that your attacking midfielders get in the box and score like Macca did.

“You want your centre-forwards scoring goals as well, and Zach got himself in a good position to score as well. We could have had more. If I was being ultra picky, we could have been more ruthless and won by more goals. But it’s our first game, so I’m pleased.”

Ayoub Assal travelled with the squad to Bedford Town and was due to be involved in the second half, but the England U20 trainee was unable to play.

“Ayoub, in the warm-up, just felt his knee a little bit from a coming together,” explained Jackson. “I don’t think it’s anything to fret about, but at this stage, we’re not going to take any chances.”
