Wollacott form suggests time could be up for Craig at the Valley

Ben Garner has hinted he is open letting Craig MacGillivray go – Charlton’s near ever-present stopper of last season.

The 29-year-old Scot has not had a look-in yet this term and must have hoped to get a run out in Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup tie with QPR.

The fact that Joe Wollacott was again preferred suggests the former Portsmouth stopper may have to move on to guarantee regular first-team action.

“I think there’s a chance for every player [to move on] while the window’s open,” Garner said after the dramatic penalties triumph over Rangers.

“Craig’s at an age, obviously, where he wants to play football. He’s an established League One goalkeeper and it’s a hard decision not to play him, because he’s a very good goalkeeper. 

“But JoJo’s come in, been given the number one shirt and I just felt he’s hit good form at the start of the season and I wanted to keep that going and build those relationship with his defenders. He did really, really well again.  

“Craig’s a fantastic goalkeeper as well and we’re really fortunate to have two very good goalkeepers, plus young Nathan Harness backing up as well. “

The Addicks are hoping to get at least one or two more deals over the line before the transfer window closes.

“We are moving forward,” Garner said. “It’s getting closer. We keep chipping away and hopefully, as soon as we can get them in, we will”
