Man hospitalised as people forced to escape blaze in car park
A man has been rushed to hospital after a fire broke out in a basement car park that forced people to escape from the shop and flats above it.
Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire in Parchmore Road in Thornton Heath at 10am this morning.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said rubbish in the stairwell of the underground car park was damaged by fire.
Firefighters assisted a man and a woman to safety. They were both treated for smoke inhalation, while the man was then taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
A further eight people escaped from the fire, with other residents remaining in their unaffected flats.
An LFB statement said: “The brigade was called at 9.59am and the fire was under control by 11.53am. Crews from West Norwood and surrounding fire stations were at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.“
