Nour Cash and Carry moves to new home in Brixton

Nour Cash and Carry, grocer and institution of Brixton Village, has moved to a new home.

The grocers are also community campaigners who have helped resist changes to the market, such as the controversial Hondo Tower.

The shop moved from its well-known space in Market Row to a larger site in the bustling Granville Arcade on Tuesday.

Nour is run by Saja Shaheen and her family, who came to the UK in the early 1990s after being forced to leave their home in Iraq due to conflict over their Iranian heritage.

After a decade starting afresh in Iran, the Iran-Iraq war broke out, and the family sought refuge in the UK.

Saja’s father soon discovered Brixton and found work locally, as well as a community that he felt he and the family belonged in.

Soon after, he opened a grocer on Electric Avenue, followed by what is now Nour Cash and Carry.

Speaking on the relocation, Saja said: “Having been part of the Brixton community for more than 30 years, we now proudly call it home.

Our small family business has been lucky enough to have global coverage and people come from all over London, and sometimes the UK, to visit.

“We are really excited to start this new chapter for Nour, and we hope to continue to serve the community for many years to come.”

After more than two decades of trading at Brixton Village, Nour Cash and Carry’s new location allows it to extend its range of specialty ingredients even further.

Brixton Village’s general manager, Diana Nabagereka, said: “Aptly hailed as a Brixton institution, it is a very exciting time seeing the evolution of the Nour Cash and Carry at Brixton Village.

“Positioned in their new and expansive location I am confident that they will continue to serve Brixton with international produce in the way they know best, while also attracting a new and curious shopper, keen to explore much of the new delicatessen range they look to introduce”.
