By Tara O’Connor, Local Democracy Reporter

A new gym is set to be built at a Croydon leisure centre.

Currently Monks Hill Sports Centre in Selsdon offers outdoor pitches, a sports hall, fitness studio and badminton courts.

Now, Croydon council has said it will spend £140,000 building a 30-station gym at the centre and make other improvements to the centre’s community room.

The centre, in Farnborough Avenue, is shared with The Quest Academy secondary school.

It is managed by GLL (Greenwich Leisure Limited) which runs all of Croydon’s leisure centres.

Cash for the new equipment was included in the council’s capital strategy for 2023/24.

The strategy outlines that in the year a total of £165,000 has been allocated for leisure equipment at Monks Hill – Croydon council has been asked to confirm what the remaining £15,000 will be spent on.

Jason Perry, executive mayor of Croydon, said: “We’re doing all we can to help our residents look after their health, get active and improve their well-being.

“This includes working with partners to invest in our sports and exercise facilities and make sure they are affordable and accessible to all.”

GLL’s partnership manager for Croydon, David Hughes, said: “It’s fantastic to receive the news that Monks Hill Sports Centre will benefit from significant investment for a new gym to enhance the health and fitness offer for local residents.”
