£10,000 awarded to South London community group

A social enterprise group were named runners up in a national competition on Wednesday.

Coin Street is a community group that works with residents of Waterloo and north Southwark. It’s latest project, Sport for Futures, has been named as a runner up in this year’s National Lottery People’s Projects.

The National Lottery People’s Project is a competition that awards £4million of National Lottery funding to 57 community groups across the UK.

Coin Street was one of only five organisations to get to the final in the People’s Projects for the London region.

With a discretionary award of up to £10,000 Coin Street can now fund Sport for Futures, its sports, wellbeing and life skills programme for local young people in Lambeth and Southwark.

A team of volunteers secured votes by talking to members of the public and spreading the word across the borough.

David Hopkins, director of community, at Coin Street said: “A big thank you to everyone who supported and voted, especially the young people involved in football and other sports we provide to build skills and life experience.

“The People’s Projects gave us an amazing opportunity to raise awareness of our work in the local community and across the capital.

“It was great to have so many people from across the community involved and supporting local young people.”

Coin Street will continue its fundraising efforts.
