High-rise flat fire is contained – but five need hospital attention

A 10th-floor flat was badly damaged by a blaze in which four people had to be led to safety by firefighters.

Ten fire engines and about 70 firefighters tackled the fire in Rymill Street in North Woolwich last night.

Most of a three-roomed flat was damaged. Firefighters led the four to safety, while others remained in their unaffected flats.

Five people were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews. About 100 residents were taken to a local rest centre.

The brigade’s 999 control officers took almost 30 calls to the blaze.

The brigade was called just after 10.30pm and the fire was under control by 11.50pm. Fire crews from Plaistow, Barking, East Ham, Poplar and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
