‘We can help him do that’ – AFC Wimbledon boss assesses loan signing of Crystal Palace goalkeeper
AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson wants to help Crystal Palace goalkeeper Owen Goodman kick on in his second loan deal away from Selhurst Park.
The Dons wrapped up a deal for Goodman on a season-long loan deal.
Ex-Colchester loanee Goodman joins former Charlton stopper Lewis Ward in forming the goalkeeper department after a summer revamp.
“I was especially pleased for Bayzo [goalkeeper coach Ashley Bayes] – it’s been difficult for him,” said Jackson on sealing a deal for Goodman.
“We’ve known that Owen has been coming in, but we have had to be patient for that one.
“Ideally he would have come to Spain with us to get amongst the group earlier, but it wasn’t to be.
“It’s good to get him in. We’re excited about him. We never waivered in wanting to bring him in, even though we had to wait.
“He did well last season for Colchester. It’s his second loan now, which is good. He’s had that experience and it’s time for a new challenge to kick on.
“Working with Bayzo and us, we feel like we can help him do that.”
Goodman conceded 65 goals during his first loan stint away from Selhurst Park with Colchester.
Palace turned down a loan offer from League Two play-off finishers Crewe Alexandra last January to keep Goodman with the U’s as he was being tested consistently.
“You players and goalkeepers, whenever you play them, make mistakes,” added Jackson.
“That happens. He kept Colchester in a number of games I felt with the saves he made, the way he commanded his box and how proactive and athletic he is.
“You know that young players make mistakes and that’s why Crystal Palace have sent him out on loan – to get that experience.
“It fills me with much more confidence knowing a goalkeeper has already had a loan at the level.
“He knows what the league looks like.
“If you watched the Euros, there are still mistakes at the top level. He can kick on with us and be consistent.
“He has to fight it out with Wardy. He’s a good goalkeeper as well and we have good competition with those two now.”
