Two residents are taking part in a national campaign to help those with a chronic illness get fit.

The initiative, called We Are Undefeatable, is aims to help those with serious conditions build activity into their lives.

Simone Gomes, 33, of Forest Hill, was born with a congenital heart defect and has suffered a stroke.

Her favourite form of exercise is playing Just Dance with her partner in their living room.

She said: “Having had a heart transplant, I’m still getting to know how my heart works, but keeping fit helps with both my physical and mental well-being.”

Anthony Linforth, 73, of Southwark, was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

He enjoys keeping active by playing football with his mates.

He said: “Remaining as fit as possible enables me to cope with my treatment.

The social side of a group activity such as walking football is profoundly valuable for my morale. I was clear that, as I got older, I should make every effort to stay fit.

Initially, I did this through attendance at the gym but I found that football was far more enjoyable.”

For Anthony, the biggest benefit of being active is the social element and emotional support – even if that means just making it to a match to cheer on the team.

Lynda Thomas, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “We are proud to partner with Sport England as they bring this exciting new campaign to life, which will inspire people with chronic illnesses like cancer to become more active.

“This is about celebrating every victory, no matter how big or small – whether a walk up the stairs, a run round the park or exercises while sitting down.

“For the 625,000 people in the UK facing disability after cancer treatment, We Are Undefeatable is incredibly exciting and empowering, and we are so pleased to be part of it.”
