Two big names of British film and TV will help secure the future of the iconic Old Royal Naval College’s historic buildings, with an evening of monologues on Thursday.
Hugh Bonneville and Jane Asher will take part in The Salon Evening, A Play for Five Voices and a Painted Hall, a semi-staged reading of monologues reverently and irreverently telling the stories of the men and women whose faces stare down on us in the magnificent Painted Hall.
The stories are written especially for the Salon Evening by West End playwright, screenwriter and 18th century specialist Ian Kelly (Mr Foote’s Other Leg, Theatre Royal Haymarket) – and you can win tickets.
The classical buildings that adorn the site today were built as the Royal Hospital for Seamen between 1696 and 1751. Designed by some of England’s greatest architects of the time, including Sir Christopher Wren, the buildings are considered amongst the finest in Europe, featuring the sumptuous Painted Hall and the neo-classical chapel.
Prior to that the site was home to the celebrated Greenwich Palace, the favoured Royal residence of Henry VIII. A small part of the excavated palace, revealed during recent conservation works, can be viewed in The Sackler Gallery in the King William Undercroft.
