Plumstead Centre opens after 15-month refurbishment to include new leisure centre

After a 15-month refurbishment, the Plumstead Centre was officially opened on Saturday by the leader of Greenwich council.

The Grade-II listed building in Plumstead High Street, which housed the original Plumstead library, has been refurbished in a manner befitting the historic status of the building as well as providing modern facilities and expanding the centre to include a leisure centre, a dance studio, a book wall and a multi-use space suitable for a range of activities.

At the opening event, families enjoyed free taster sessions including ballet, tap and drama, mini tennis, badminton, children’s football and soft play.

Council leader Cllr Danny Thorpe said: “The Plumstead Centre will bring new and exciting opportunities for local people and I’m sure it will very quickly become the heart of the community here.

“At a time when other councils are closing libraries, I’m very proud that we are investing in our public spaces and providing for our residents. In the last few years alone, we have opened an Enchanted Story Garden at the Eltham Centre, Sutcliffe Park Sports Centre which boasts outdoor running tracks and a climbing wall and the Greenwich Centre.”

Cllr Miranda Williams, cabinet member for culture, leisure and third sector, said: “Through arts, culture and leisure activities we want to promote community cohesion and stimulate change, and that starts with groups having a great place to meet.

“We are committed to supporting grassroots organisations and inspiring the younger generation to dream big. This flexible space will hopefully attract new community groups and activities that have not previously been available in Plumstead, exciting residents of all ages.

“The sports hall, the high-tech gym and children’s soft play, all go a long way towards our ambition to get the borough more active.”

Mark Sesnan, chief executive of Greenwich Leisure Ltd, said: “It was an absolute privilege to be at the grand opening.

“The best thing was the whole community of Plumstead was there – all ages, abilities and ethnicities – checking out what’s on offer.

“It’s there for you, it’s something special and there aren’t many places in London that can boast these facilities. So why not go along and have a look?”
