Gary Rowett has revealed that George Saville missed Millwall’s 2-2 draw with Luton as a precaution following the club’s intense run of fixtures.

The Lions stay fifth in the table after picking up a point on the road as Rowett reflected on another big match.

Here are Daniel Marsh’s four takeaways from Millwall’s 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough.

The Lions centre-back landed awkwardly after attacking a set-piece early in the second half and attempted to play on. But Cooper was visibly struggling and was withdrawn minutes after Middlesbrough took the lead through Marcus Forss.

The Lions, who were sixth prior to their defeat at The Riverside, are now two points outside the play-off places but still have a game in hand on the majority of the teams above them.

Flemming plundered his fifth goal in four games to seal the points in the 83rd minute as Millwall ended Boxing Day in sixth spot with a game in hand on most of their rivals.

Voglsammer has been an instant hit with fans but had failed to find the net in 18 appearances prior to Boxing Day’s trip to Vicarage Road.

Bennett missed out for Millwall alongside Scott Malone, who was also absent from the Lions bench.

Andreas Voglsammer broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute with a crisp low finish to open his Lions account. Hassane Kamara was dismissed towards the end of the first-half for lashing out at Danny McNamara to leave the Hornets with a mountain to climb. 

The Lions have had plenty of joy against the Blues in recent years and while they may have extended their unbeaten run at St Andrew’s to seven matches, they really should have been heading back down the M40 with another three-point haul – because their hosts were there for the taking.

The Blues had been in impressive form and were unbeaten in five prior to the match in midweek. John Eustace’s side clashed with the Lions after putting the Championship’s early pacesetters QPR to the sword last Friday night, but they struggled to lay a glove on Millwall.

The Lions had the better chances against Rowett’s former side but were forced to settle for a point after second-half substitute Tyler Burey blew a great chance late in the game.

The former Southend United man is still not quite ready to make a return to training following his latest scan.

Wednesday night’s performance against Rotherham was a world away from the meek display the Lions produced at Ewood Park last Saturday – but it still wasn’t enough to bring Gary Rowett’s side some much needed respite on the road.

Cresswell started the Lions’ 2-1 defeat at Blackburn last weekend but failed to make the matchday 18 as Rowett reverted to a 4-2-3-1 system.
