Westminster Tories hit out at tax on foreign shoppers that ‘will hit the West End’

Westminster Tory councillors have heavily criticised the Government’s decision to impose taxes on goods bought by foreign shoppers. Until 2021, tourists from outside the EU could claim a VAT refund on any retail purchases made in the UK. The policy was thought to have helped the West End become a magnet for fashionistas from China, the Middle East and around the world.

Lewisham Council says leisure pool at risk of closure is running at a £400k deficit

A leisure pool in Deptford at risk of not reopening is running at a deficit of about £400,000 per year, Lewisham Council has said. Locals this week expressed dismay after it emerged that the Wavelengths leisure pool might be closed for good. Wavelengths closed along with all other leisure facilities across the borough when the UK went into lockdown.

1970s department store to be knocked down and replaced with modern work spaces

A former flagship department store and offices will be knocked down to make way for modern work spaces, shops and a village square in Victoria. The 1970s House of Fraser department store in Victoria Street closed for the last time in 2019. There has been a department store in the street since 1871 when the Army and Navy Co-operative Society leased distillery premises and expanded rapidly in the 1870s.

Councillors approve new offices on former South London Mail Centre site in Nine Elms

New offices on the former South London Mail Centre site in Nine Elms have been approved unanimously by Wandsworth Council’s planning committee. Work is expected to begin on the site on Nine Elms Lane this summer. It will see an eleven-storey building built, complete with a rooftop terrace, and will mainly house offices as well as some flexible space for start-ups and community groups to use.
