Substitute Beth England’s goal gave the assembled  Blues fans a collective sigh of relief as it halted a comeback by Brighton that threatened the champions’ title retention credentials.

Chelsea fans have a double treat in store tomorrow – the women and men’s sides are playing at home.

They say you wait ages for a number 11 bus then three come at once. The footballing equivalent was played out at Birmingham tonight as Chelsea finally broke the back of the dogged home defence.

Chelsea thrashed Manchester United in a display of clinical finishing that overwhelmed the home side by six goals to one in the WSL. A brace by Sam Kerr, an opener by Fran Kirby, a sensational solo effort by Pernille Harder, and a goal apiece from substitutes Drew Spence and Jessie Fleming saw off the limited resistance of previously unbeaten United.

Chelsea now know what it takes to win the Premier League  – be a bit more like Manchester City who, thanks to Gabriel Jesus 53rd minute strike, showed the west Londoners that just defending with the hope of a counter-attack goal, is not going to be enough.

City were superior in all facets of this game, and fully deserved all three points.

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel will be heaving a huge sigh of relief that N’Golo Kante came through 45 minutes of EFL Cup football without any injury as they prepare to face Manchester City at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.

Romelu Lukaku just does what Lukaku does and he smashed home a brace – the first and last in a  3-0 victory over a rugged and organised Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge in the late afternoon game.

The three points aided by a smart, opportunistic goal from Mateo Kovacic puts the west Londoners joint top of the Premier League with Manchester United on 10 points.

Champions Chelsea crashed to a 3-2 opening day WSL defeat to Arsenal that already puts their title defence challenge on the back foot. In a pulsating see-sawing match the home side deserved the victory.

There can be no excuses for Thomas Tuchel if Chelsea fail to mount a Premier League challenge and progress very deep in the Champions League and domestic cup competitions.

Chelsea showed just why they are the champions of Europe with a breathtaking second half defensive display to ensure they left the hotbed of Anfield with a point. The reason. After taking a deserved 1-0 lead through Kai Havertz, they had to survive the second half with 10-men after Reece James was adjudged via VAR that he handled the ball, on his goal line.

Chelsea are close to clearing out most of their dead wood players and recouping almost all of the £97million they paid for Romelu Lukaku.
