Southwark cabinet minister for housing Leo Pollak has quit after it emerged he had not been transparent about a Twitter account that he managed, which slammed community groups. He has apologised to leader Cllr Kieron Williams for “a serious error of judgement that doesn’t meet the standards of openness and accountability that you would expect of a public representative”.

Croydon staff told work will continue amid reports of suspension of four chiefs

Croydon Council has been assuring staff that services will continue as usual as claims that four senior members of staff have been suspended circulate. The Local Government Chronical reported yesterday evening (Tuesday, February 9) that director of finance Lisa Taylor, director of place Shifa Mustafa, director of localities Hazel Simmonds and director of health, wellbeing and adults Guy Van Dichele have been suspended.

Doomed Virgo Fidelis School will revive as two single-gender Catholic private schools thanks to mystery benefactor

A school doomed to close because of financial problems and a crumbling home will be the new home of two private Catholic schools, after a massive donation from an anonymous donor. Virgo Fidelis Convent Senior School, in Central Hill, Upper Norwood, is set to close in August because of safety, education and finance issues and so stopped accepting Year 7 pupils last September.

Top Met cop criticised for “disproportionate” use of Stop & Search

The Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police has been criticised for his attempt to justify the way stop and search is used on young black men in London. Deputy Commissioner Sir Stephen House was quoted in the Evening Standard saying “of course our stopping and searching is disproportionate” as the Met is focusing its attention “where the problem lies”.
