Capital Xtra presenter hosts networking event for aspiring musicians
A radio presenter has hosted a networking event in Brixton for aspiring musicians.
The host of the Capital Xtra Breakfast Show, Shayna Marie, spoke to musicians from South London Youth Music funded initiatives about building their own networks in music at the Turtle Bay restaurant in Brixton.
The event follows research from charity Youth Music which found that over a third (35%) of young creatives think a lack of contacts and network is one of the biggest barriers to pursuing and sustaining a career in music.
Spoken word artist, actor and musician Marz Fay said: “The Turtle Bay event was an amazing opportunity to meet other young people within the industry.
“I was able to meet another young person who has a show at the same radio station as me, which was great because I was looking to network within my station more.

“I also was able to meet my favourite presenter, which was crazy- she gave me the best advice about releasing my own music.”
Hip-hop rapper Lil Trubz, whose real name is Liam Henry, said: “I didn’t know what to expect but the turnout was amazing.
“The vibes were high and everyone was open and willing to connect. I think the environment helped and more of these arrangements would be super healthy for up and coming creatives.”
The Caribbean restaurant chain Turtle Bay has partnered with Youth Music as part of its commitment to help young people get into the music industry.
As part of the partnership, Turtle Bay is donating £30,000 to Youth Music’s NextGen Fund, which helps behind the scenes creatives take a step forward in participating and changing the music scene.
