London Design Festival is back with ‘rebellious energy’ and a new focus on fonts
It’s the 22nd edition of London Design Festival (LDF), which means that the capital will once again be lit up by a programme of world-class design interventions.
This year, there will be a special focus on fonts, with Bankside hosting an eclectic range of events – some free of charge – exploring a text-based approach to design.
Running from September 14 until 22, all LDFs typeface designers, from established names to up and coming talent will come together for an exciting programme.
In addition, Bankside will run its first LDF-inspired food and drink trail, including discounts and tastings from an array of restaurants such as The Distillery, OXBO, Guiseppe’s, The Refinery, The Rake, Casa Du Frango, Flat Iron Square, Carrubo and In Horto.
A map of trail restaurants will be available from Bankside’s website at the end of August.
Nicole Gordon, chief executive of Better Bankside, said: “The London Design Festival is one of the highlights of Bankside’s year.
“Its celebration of the very best in design creativity is a natural fit for ‘London’s Other Side,’ whose melting pot of rebellious energy and difference is largely fuelled by the creatives who work and live here.”
Typography and font event highlights include, Type Tasting, where visitors will discover how typography narrates time, place and memory.
In this unusual event, founder of Type Tasting and author of the bestselling “Why Fonts Matter”, Sarah Hyndman will transport her audience from the 16th century to Bankside today with a multi-sensory talk featuring locally sourced food and drinks
On September 18, Better Bankside will present, An Evening of Typeface. This free event will look into everything from the bespoke font created for The Globe, The Team and how they reshaped the typeface of one of the largest and oldest savings organisations in the UK as well as To The Point and its campaigns including the Southwark Climate Collective.
‘Material Matters’ talks and installations at Barge House, Bankside will run for the duration of the festival. This unmissable programme will see world-leading manufacturers and designers come together for a series of talks and installations to celebrate the importance of materials in design and architecture.
Other LDF event highlights include engaging digital art by recent London graduate Dilara Koseyi, inspired by everyday life in London and the broad range of emotions the capital city creates.
For those wanting to get stuck in, Mylk and Honey Clothier will lead a free session of Mindful Crafting at Arch 23, on September 21.
