A round of apple-ause

Borough Market got to the core of the problem on Sunday.

The market celebrated its annual Apple Day, to mark the rich heritage of the British harvest – and to encourage people not to waste Britain’s favourite fruit.

Apples are one of the UK’s most wasted foods. According to the Waste and Resources Action programme 4.4million apples are thrown away untouched every day in the UK. Borough Market is keen to play its part to help reduce this: an apple a day keeps food waste at bay.

The Berry Man and Corn Queen were among the characters taking part in the festivities.
Visitors took part in tastings of the diverse range of varieties, plus games, apple peeling competitions and chef Angela Clutton inspired the crowds by cooking up a range of delicious apple-themed dishes.

 

Historical theatre company the Lions Part delighted the crowd with music, songs, dancing, games and tales.

Borough Market’s neighbour Southwark Cathedral delivered a short act of harvest worship in the market, accompanied by the market’s choir.

Money was raised for the Robes Project, a charity which provides winter night shelters for the homeless of south London.
