‘Affordable’ homes in Nine Elms do exist

The new Nine Elms isn’t all see-through swimming pools and plush penthouses.

Town hall chiefs and developers looked over 386 new affordable homes for Wandsworth at New Mansion Square, part of the Battersea Power Station masterplan.

The affordable homes are in seven buildings arranged around a garden square, which echo the style of London’s grand red brick mansion blocks, and will be ready for residents to start moving into from 2022, the same year that the Grade-II listed

Battersea Power Station will open its doors to the public.

This part of the development includes a new public green space, children’s play area, an NHS medical centre and workspaces for start-up businesses and local entrepreneurs, designed by architects Patel Taylor and being built by Ardmore.

The scheme’s name, New Mansion Square, pays homage to the traditional mansion blocks found in the local area.

The new buildings being built will also celebrate local history – Tweed, Arden and Foots Row Mansions have been named after lost streets first built in the 1870s as Battersea boomed.
