Afghan international women footballers rescued by Kim Kardashian kick off football’s campaign to help refugees

No one bothered keeping the score, once their goal tally reached double figures.

The Afghanistan Development Squad soundly beat the Women’s Parliamentary Team at Dulwich Hamlet Football Club’s ground, Champion Hill, on Tuesday [March 29].

This show of unity, in the drizzle before kick-off, might have helped. In their homeland, girls are being thrown out of secondary schools and women must be accompanied by a male relative to fly on planes.

Their evacuation flight in November was funded by US reality TV star Kim Kardashian.

Amnesty International UK used the game to kick start its Football Welcomes month, an initiative to welcome refugees and asylum seekers into UK communities.

The sight of one player in the Hamlet dugout, which just has the word “HOME” was a poignant moment.
