Almost 1000 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people in Croydon

Almost one in every 100 people in Croydon now have coronavirus, according to the last figures.
Figured released on Tuesday show that the current rate is 978 cases per 100,000 people. This compares to an average national rate of 546, while the average London rate is 971 per 100,000.
At the moment there are more than 200 Covid-19 patients being treated at Croydon University Hospital, 14 of whom are in critical care.
Croydon council leader, Councillor Hamida Ali, said: “There have been massive increases, that really started to scale up in the second week of December. I was getting very, very concerned at how much the incidence rate was jumping up.
“We’ve got to the right place in having a national lockdown, Tier 4 had a stay at home message but I don’t think the tier system was able to achieve what a lockdown can.
“I think it has been late but it is better late than never, it is a really important part of the response. I appreciate how difficult it is for all of us, let’s just hope that this, combined with the vaccination project, offers us a way back to life as we knew it.”
In the seven days up to December 31, the following five areas of Croydon had the highest coronavirus rates.
- Shirley West – 1,179 cases per 100,000
- Thornton Heath North West – 1,176 cases per 100,000
- Addiscombe North – 1,100 cases per 100,000
- Park Hill and Lloyd Park – 1,085 per 100,000
- Purley North – 1,075 cases per 100,000
And for the same period there were just four areas with cases lower than 800 per 100,000. These were:
- South Norwood Central – 647
- Woodside and Ashburton – 689
- Kenley South – 717
- Croham – 767
