Bankside electricity substation boost will help homes and offices

Developers say a £6million project will transform an electricity substation so it can provide extra power to homes, shops and offices nearby.

UK Power Networks is planning to redevelop a substation at Bankside and also provide additional electricity resilience for properties across London Bridge, Southwark and Waterloo.

Engineers will install a new cabling and a transformer so power can be safely delivered for residents and businesses by the end of 2021.

Project manager Alun Read said: “Thousands of people in this area of London rely on us to supply their electricity safely, reliably and efficiently, to keep the capital running smoothly.

“We are working closely with our contractors to deliver these vital upgrades.

When we complete our works within the next two years, we will have commissioned a better substation which will supply local communities and businesses well into the future.”

UK Power Networks keeps the lights on for more than eight million homes, schools, hospitals and businesses across London, the South-east and East of England.

The company invests more than £600million annually in maintaining and improving electricity networks.

The majority of London’s electricity infrastructure is underground, including more than 36,000 kilometres of cabling.
