Bexley is top of pile for recyling again

Bexley is the top London borough for recycling for the 13th year running – and that’s official.

The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs  found that 52.7 per cent of household waste in Bexley is sent for reuse, recycling or composting.

The findings are based on national data collected from local authorities, which is compiled into an annual table and used as a benchmark to compare how councils are performing.

Councillor Peter Craske, cabinet member for community safety, environment and leisure, said: “To maintain such a high rate for yet another year, and to do so for 13 years consistently, is a huge achievement.

“We have planned some improvements at the Reuse and Recycling Centres in Thames Road and Foots Cray to further improve the recycling rates and we continue to attract a high number of members for our garden waste scheme.

“We’ve seen in the data that Ealing are not far behind, so I thank our residents and urge them to keep up their good work and remember to recycle responsibly.”

In Bexley, residents are rewarded for recycling through the London Green Points – Bexley scheme. Those who sign up earn Green Points based on how much they recycle, which can be exchanged for a wide range of products and activities.

Members also receive discounts and offers from local businesses. They also have the chance to win up to £15,000 each year for local charities and community projects.
