BREAKING: Girl dies in Wimbledon primary school crash

A girl has died after a crash at a primary school today, with the driver arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The Met confirmed that the girl, aged eight, died following an incident where a car collided with a building at The Study Preparatory School in Camp Road, Wimbledon shortly before 10am.

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, the Met’s local police commander for South West London, said: “This is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends, and everyone affected today.

“We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident.”

The Met confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, a woman aged in her 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Six other children and two adults have been left injured, the Met said.

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond said he understands several people are fighting for their lives, with their conditions described as “critical”. He said he was “very concerned” and shared his thoughts and prayers.

A statement from the Met said: “Police were called at 9.54am on Thursday, July 6 to reports that a car had collided with a building at The Study Prep, a school in Camp Road, Wimbledon.

“Officers attended, along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, and London’s Air Ambulance.

“There have been further injuries and we await an update from the London Ambulance Service.

“The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene.

“We are not treating this incident as terror related.”
