Brixton charity appealing for cash to feed struggling families

A charity which is feeding struggling families during Covid-19 restrictions has appealed for anyone with a Christmas party budget that won’t be spent this year to contribute.

Because of lockdown, Mosaic Clubhouse, based in Effra Road, Brixton, is facing increasing calls to help people with their mental health recovery, which it has been doing since 1994.

More people than ever before are reaching out to Mosaic Clubhouse for help and support. It had to close its doors in March and work virtually and by phone and Zoom.

One member has started an online radio show, another set up a film club on Zoom, and the charity also created a writing group over email.

Food security has become a major issue amongst members, with some going without food for days at a time.

That started with food shortages and longer waits to access food banks in March, then members shielding, self-isolating and those struggling with money.

Its closed café’s supplies are being given to those who need it, plus in extra tinned and long life food as the pandemic continued.

It has also used its Christmas party budget for members to continue to buy supplies so it can deliver food parcels to members who needed them.

A statement from Mosaic said: “We are doing all we can to help our members access food and essential supplies, but we need your help.

“Our message to our members has been that while our building may be closed, our community is open. In the lead-up to Christmas we want to ask local businesses, offices and individuals if they would like to donate to help us continue this support throughout the winter months.

“By making a donation or donating your Christmas party budget that can’t be used this year, you could help us deliver more food parcels to those who need them,”

Donate here or on Just Giving here or by emailing the head of fundraising, Poppy, at p.reindorp@mosaic-clubhouse.org
