Building work starts on Evelina London Children’s Hospital’s new centre
The start of construction work on a new state-of-the-art day surgery centre at Evelina London Children’s Hospital was marked by an official ‘breaking the ground’ ceremony recently.
The new five-storey building in Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth, will open in 2022 to increase capacity for planned diagnostic and surgical procedures.
This will mean that patients will be able to have diagnostic and day surgery treatments in one place.
It will also provide two new operating theatres, specialist clinical facilities and space for future services, which will reduce waiting times.
The centre is part of a series of ambitious new developments planned to help meet the growing demand for Evelina London’s services.
Since Evelina London, which is part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, opened its award-winning hospital building in 2005, demand for its services has grown rapidly.
Inpatient activity has doubled and outpatient activity has more than doubled.
Marian Ridley, Director of Evelina London, said: “We are delighted to begin work on our new day surgery centre.
“It will provide diagnostic and day surgical care in one setting and give us two new operating theatres, which will help reduce the time children and young people wait for their treatment and improve the experience for families.
“Over the past 10 years, the number of children and young people needing our world-class services has grown substantially.
“We now care for more than 95,000 families a year and the number of patients in our care continues to rise.”
The new centre will be next to Evelina London Children’s Hospital and is being built by Morgan Sindall Construction.
Evelina London’s development plans also include a major extension to the existing hospital and the relocation of outpatients to a new building on nearby Royal Street.
