Building works ‘making my daughter’s life a misery,’ claims mum

A mum has claimed building works on her estate are making her daughter’s life a misery.

Dreenagh Lyle, 68, said her daughter’s anxiety had skyrocketed since construction began outside their home six-days-a-week.

Ms Lyle, who lives on the South Lambeth estate in Stockwell, said her daughter suffered her first seizure in 15 years following the start of the building work outside the front of their home in 2020.

Homes for Lambeth (HfL]), Lambeth council’s house-building company, is building 30 houses in a block in front of Wimbourne House, where Ms Lyle lives.

The block is the first stage of HfL’s plans to redevelop the estate, creating up to 261 new homes on the site.

Ms Lyle said: “Surely my disabled daughter is allowed reasonable adjustment. Her anxiety has got worse since the works began.

“My daughter had a major seizure and she had to be pushed out into the street. It took them two hours (the ambulance) to get here because of the low-traffic neighbourhood and the entrances to the block.”

Ms Lyle said when Lambeth first approached residents about the redevelopment of the estate in 2014, senior staff from the council would attend meetings with people living on the estate.

But she said as time has gone on they’ve stopped appearing at meetings and residents have been told there are no updates to share.

South Lambeth estate is one of six the council is redeveloping across the borough in a bid to create 1,000 new homes. HfL aims to build up to 261 extra homes on the South Lambeth estate through the revamp.

The five low-rise blocks on the estate will be bulldozed as part of the plans, but the taller block Wimbourne House will remain.

Residents in two of the lower blocks, Broadstone and Sturminster, will move into the block currently under construction before their former homes are demolished.
