‘Covid-19 testing is now a way of life’ warns doctor as new clinics open in Lambeth
A leading doctor has warned that regular Covid-19 testing is “here for the long term”, as he embarks on a nationwide rollout of clinics to meet huge demand for private tests.
Professor Frank Joseph, director of DAM Health UK, launched his first Covid-19 in Clapham last week.
Professor Joseph said: “Testing is now a way of life.
“Even with the vaccine, which only stops people getting sick, we will need negative tests before travelling overseas for holidays or work and for gatherings.
“Many people are taking tests with us before visiting extended family bubbles too.
“Testing helps to stop the spread of the disease.
“Until we know whether the vaccine stops us from transmitting the virus, we will still need to be tested on a regular basis.
“Previous vaccines for other things have shown a decrease in transmissibility, but we can’t take anything as a given with this virus, so we need to continue to work towards protecting people and this includes testing.
“We’re proud to play our part in this effort and open our new clinic in Clapham.
“People are already making booking enquiries with us ahead of the summer holidays when travel rules could be relaxed.”
In March, Lambeth Council launched a comprehensive Covid-19 self-isolation support service which included payments of up to £500 for residents on low incomes told to stay at home.
The £500 payment scheme is aimed at filling gaps in the government’s existing Test and Trace Support Payment that may exclude some Lambeth residents due to the strict eligibility requirements.
Cllr Jim Dickson, Lambeth Cabinet joint member for Health and Social Care, said: “This is the most comprehensive support package offered by a local authority and is aimed at easing the financial burden on residents when they need it most.
“The £500 payment could be a lifeline for some households who would face up to ten days without income if they cannot work from home.
“We are also grateful to Age UK Lambeth for its support and lending its local expertise to support some of our most vulnerable residents.”
