Domestic abuse charity shortlisted for major award

A west London domestic abuse charity has been shortlisted for this year’s Charity Awards, the most prestigious awards scheme in the sector.

Advance has been shortlisted for its Angelou Partnership, which supports women in west London who have experienced domestic abuse.

The partnership is made up of 10 voluntary organisations, each offering a different kind of specialist support including services tailored to Black and minority women and LGBT+ communities.

The partnership also helps professionals and practitioners, including doctors, midwives and police officers, to identify domestic abuse and refer to our specialist domestic abuse services.

Liz Mack, Advance chief executive, said: “Now celebrating its 10th year, Angelou thoroughly deserves this recognition for its innovative approach to supporting women experiencing abuse.

“The partnership was born out of the fundamental recognition that each survivor’s experiences of abuse will be different, and she will have different needs – a ‘one size fits all’ approach doesn’t work.

“Since its launch, Angelou has walked alongside women and girls more than 12000 times, helping them feel safer and to improve their wellbeing during and after abuse.

“The fact that 94 per cent of these women and girls reported a reduction in abuse due to support and advice received is just one outcome that proves that Angelou works.”

The Charity Awards winners will be announced on July 3, at a gala evening in London, presented by BBC news presenter Asad Ahmad.

Matthew Nolan, chief executive of Civil Society Media which organises the Charity Awards, said: “At a time when the sector is struggling with higher costs, shrinking donations and ever-increasing demand for its work, it is reassuring and inspiring to see the extent and quality of charitable activity that is still going on across the country.”
