Elm Park post office in Brixton is set to move – but not very far
A popular post office in Tulse Hill is relocating because the current postmaster is looking to retire.
In March, the Elm Park post office will move next door to the V7 convenience store at 68 Elm Park, with the new branch set to offer significantly longer hours.
Opening hours will be Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm and Saturday 9.30am-4.30pm.
This will mean that opening hours would more than double as the branch is only currently open on weekday afternoons.
The existing branch will close on Tuesday, March 14 at 5.30pm, with the new branch opening at V7 Local Store DIY on Friday, March 17 at 1pm.
During the transfer, two alternative branches nearby are available. Brixton Hill post office, 104-106 Brixton Hill, and Streatham Hill post office, 102 Streatham Hill.
Jason Collins, Post Office network provision manager, said: “We are delighted to have a permanent solution at a nearby store to safeguard service and which will allow the current postmaster to retire.”
The post office remains one of the most ubiquitous sights on UK high streets. There are currently 11,500 branches – more than all the banks and building societies combined.
It claims that nearly 100 per cent of the population lives within three miles of a branch.
