Greenwich council leader ‘blown away’ by surge of residents donating to Afghan refugees
A council leader has been ‘blown away’ by a surge of residents donating to Afghan refugees.
Greenwich residents have been donating a range of things from money, clothing, prayer mats and other useful items, and even hosting refugees in their own homes.
Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “We’ve been absolutely blown away by the generosity of local people trying to help refugees from Afghanistan in our borough.
“We are currently sorting through donations from the public and we now have everything we need.
“We are asking those who want to help to support charities and organisations responding to the crisis in Afghanistan.
“The organisation Care4Calais has drop off locations for donations of essential items, but bear in mind that people staying in quarantine hotels do not have regular access to washing machines, so please make sure donations are clean and in a good state.
“Earlier this week I said that Royal Greenwich had a proud history of welcoming refugees into our borough. From the overwhelming support we’ve seen over the past few days, I’m delighted to see the tradition continue.”
