By Alice Neil
A new discount card is rewarding community services and supporting small businesses across the borough.
The Lewisham Local card offers up to 50% off to community supporters at over 500 local businesses.
The card offers discounts over a range of industries including food and drink, retail and entertainment.
Residents who support the community, by donating their time, skills or money can apply for a free card.
Others can buy the card for £20, which goes to Lewisham Local’s Community Fund, to support charities in the borough.
The scheme aims to encourage people to spend money in their local communities and help small businesses.
Chief executive Davidson Otobo of local grocery store, Ordrs, said: “Seems like a win-win situation.
“You get to support people, you get exclusive discounts, everybody’s winning basically.
“As well as boost the awareness of my business and getting me customers who are passionate about supporting local business, Lewisham Local has allowed me to be a part of a BIG vision that empowers the local community.”
Cllr Jonathan Slater said: “Lewisham Council is proud of the work that Lewisham Local has been doing to support independent businesses in the borough.
“Charities and community volunteers have been vital in helping us protect vulnerable residents during the pandemic and we are delighted to promote Lewisham Local’s Community Fund.”
So far, over 3,000 community volunteers have signed up for the card.
