Mayor hails re-development in the heart of East Croydon as ‘positive step forward’

Croydon’s Mayor has thrown his support behind plans to build 569 new flats on the vacant office building site in the heart of East Croydon.
This followed the recent purchase of the former City Link site by Cheyne Capital for £210million.
The vacant office building sits next to the iconic No.1 Croydon building and faces busy East Croydon station. Planning permission was previously granted to build 485 “co-living units” and 84 affordable homes in a 28-storey tower and a 14-storey block.
Cheyne’s purchase of the site attracted the praise of Mayor Jason Perry. On X, he said: “Positive step forward in providing new housing options, creating jobs, and enhancing local amenities. Pleased to see renewed confidence in Croydon attracting investment, and I look forward to the positive impact this will have on our community.”
Development on the site was previously stalled due to concerns that the height of the development would overshadow the neighbouring No. 1 Croydon building, on the other side of Addiscombe Road.
Wittington Investments, the developers, appealed the council’s decision, and the planning inspector ruled in their favour. The decision allows the development to proceed despite concerns over its height and visual impact.
Under current plans, the development will include amenities like a gym and wellness suite, cinema, games room and recording studio. They will also be built to a high sustainability certification.
Following the purchase, Cheyne’s Matt Floyd said: “We are proud to support a project which can play a role in furthering the regeneration of Croydon, and will contribute to its vibrant business and living community.
“This project reflects Cheyne Capital’s continued commitment to the UK flexible-living sector.”
A date for the demolition of City Link House has not yet been announced.
