Merton event on February 2 to mark 76th anniversary of liberation of Auschwitz-Berkenau

An annual event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day will be held virtually this year to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Second World War.
Merton’s civic event commemorates the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Berkenau. The event also remembers subsequent genocides around the world, including Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur.
A virtual screening open to all will be broadcast on Tuesday February 2 from 7-9pm to mark the international Holocaust Memorial Day yesterday, Wednesday January 27.
Merton’s civic event will feature contributions from representatives of the borough’s faith and belief forum, Wimbledon Synagogue, and political leaders. It will be attended by the Mayor of Merton, councillors, representatives from the Met Police and London Fire Brigade.
The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Sally Kenny, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a chance for us all to pause and remember the millions of victims of the Holocaust and other genocides and honour the survivors. It is an important opportunity for everyone to reflect upon these terrible events and remember the horrors that prejudice, and hatred can lead to. Marking this day with a civic event is part of the council’s commitment to continue to work together with our communities to promote tolerance and unity.”
Merton’s Cabinet Member for Women and Equalities, Councillor Marsie Skeete, said: “It is vital that we remember the suffering of the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides, so we can learn from these atrocities and work to create a safer future for everyone. The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day ‘Be the light in the darkness’ encourages us all to take a stand against intolerance and hostility towards people based upon their identity.
“In Merton we are proud to have a rich diverse community and Holocaust Memorial Day reaffirms our commitment to work continuously to eradicate hatred, prejudice, and discrimination in all its forms.”
