Running the streets of Greenwich need not be a drag, unless you want it to be
The Ye Olde Rose and Crown pub in Greenwich is hosting its annual Michael Joyce Charity Drag Race tomorrow as part of Greenwich’s wider LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations.
Attendees of the event will have the chance to enjoy drag performances, an outside bar and music outside the pub until 9pm.
The event starts at 5pm outside of the pub, where there will be a stage with acts performing from 5.15pm to 6.45pm, and an outside bar serving refreshments to all visitors.
The event will be hosted by drag queen and legend Miss Aisles, who will be supported by a number of drag artists.
The main event starts at 7.30pm, which involves a race around the streets of Greenwich, Greenwich Square, and back to the pub. All racers are required to be in full drag.
The race is open to drag queens and drag kings, both professional and amateur. Music and acts will take place until 9pm outside the pub.
The event raises money for four main charities: Albert Kennedy Trust, which raises money for homeless LGBTQ+ youth, HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust, mental health charity Mind, and Macmillan Cancer Support, which raises money to support those living with cancer.
As part of their wider support for the LGBTQ+ community, Greene King is donating 10p for every bottle sold of Progress Pale Ale to the Switchboard LGBT+ charity.
Nathan Power, General Manager at Ye Olde Rose and Crown said: “When we first set up this event in 2007, it was a way to bring the community together and raise money for some amazing charities. It has been seven years since we last held the annual drag race in Greenwich and I am so excited to bring it back.”
“This year we are not only raising money but also honouring my late friend Michael Joyce, who gave so much to this community and who had the original idea to get up in drag and run around Greenwich square for charity.”
