Sabina Nessa memorial walk to take place one year after murder
This Saturday marks one year since Sabina Nessa’s horrific murder in Kidbrooke.
To celebrate her life and the impact she had, Sabina’s family will be organising a remembrance walk in Kidbrooke on the evening of September 24, as the original walk for this Saturday was postponed following the death of the Queen.
Koci Selamaj, 36, of Terminus Road, Eastbourne, was jailed for life for the murder of the 28-year-old primary school teacher, which took place on September 17, 2021.
Selamaj drove from the south coast to Cator Park in Kidbrooke, where he carried out the attack.
Sentencing Selamaj at the Old Bailey, Mr Justice Sweeney said that he had carried out an “absolutely appalling murder” and that he will now serve at least 36 years in jail.
At the time of her murder, Sabina’s sister, Jebina Yasmin Islam, said at a vigil: “We have lost an amazing, caring, beautiful sister, who left this world far too early.
“Words cannot describe how we are feeling – this feels like we are stuck in a bad dream and can’t get out of it. Our world is shattered. We are simply lost for words.
“No family should go through what we are going through.”
Ms Nessa’s uncle, Shahin Miah, said his niece was “a kind and open-minded person”, who was “always smiling and helping others”.
He said Ms Nessa’s death has “once again brought to the fore the question of women’s safety on the streets”.
The memorial walk for Sabina will begin by her home in Cator Park South at 8pm and finish in Pegler Square, where there will be a minute’s silence, speeches, and a reading of an award-winning poem which Sabina wrote herself.
Sabina’s family have asked attendees to wear white in her honour as Sabina loved light, her sisters have said they would love everyone to walk with glow sticks and electric candles, which will be provided.
Greenwich council will be lighting Woolwich town hall in yellow, the colour of sunflowers – Sabina’s favourite flower – on Saturday evening in remembrance.
