Suspicious package sparks US embassy security alert

The US Embassy building in Nine Elms was locked down this morning after a security alert was triggered due to a suspicious package.

But an all-clear was sounded shortly after 11am, with the incident being declared a false alarm.

The embassy has been home to the US foreign office for five years after it moved to the new purpose-built setting near the Thames from its old home in Grosvenor Square.

An alarm inside the building at 33 Nine Elms Lane began going off at around 10.15am telling people to stay away from windows and move to assembly areas.

Outside the embassy, police told members of the public to clear the area while sniffer dogs were seen patrolling, along with armed police.

But the Met have since confirmed that the incident has been ‘stood down’.

The US Embassy issued a statement on social media confirming the incident and declaring it was now business as usual.

The message on Twitter said: “The US Embassy is back to normal business operations. Local authorities investigated and cleared a suspicious package outside the Embassy.

“Thanks to @metpoliceuk for your swift action, and thanks to all visitors for your cooperation and patience at this time.”
