Temporary mortuary in Fulham to cope with coronavirus deaths

A temporary mortuary is being built to help cope with the predicted rise in deaths from coronavirus.

The tented structure is located beside West London Coroners’ Court in Bagley’s Lane, Fulham, pictured above.

The temporary extension to the mortuary will have capacity for the bodies of about 150 people, according to Hammersmith and Fulham council.

It could be used for people from Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Richmond and Kingston who have died from coronavirus.

The mortuary was used after the bodies of 30 British holiday-makers were repatriated via Heathrow Airport after they were killed in a terror attack in 2015.

They were amongst 38 people who were killed when a gunman went on a rampage at the Tunisian resort of Sousse.

The adjacent coroners’ court hears inquests into the deaths of people from Hammersmith and Fulham, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Ealing, Richmond and Kingston.

A similar tented building was erected last month at Westminster coroners’ court in Horseferry Road in central London for people who died from the virus in the boroughs of Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea.
