Blackheath Tea Hut regulars raise nearly £5,000 in two days after it was wrecked by a Mercedes

Regular users of a well-loved tea hut which was destroyed when a car crashed into it on Tuesday night have already raised almost £5,000 to return it to its former glory.

The Blackheath Tea Hut, which has stood on the corner of Shooters Hill Road and Goffers Road for nearly 100 years, was wrecked by a silver Mercedes at around 7pm.

The hut’s owner said the force of the vehicle hitting the building was so strong “it spun the entire hut around 90 degrees, ripping out all of the services from the ground – gas, water and electric”.

A man and two women, one of whom is an employee of the hut, were injured, with the employee trapped inside the wreckage.

The owner said on Facebook: “Firstly and most importantly my staff member is now stable. Broken ribs and breast plate, now transferred to Chelsea burns unit so praying for her. But her family are happy with her condition, which I am truly grateful for.

“We will not be defeated by one reckless driver and will be rebuilding it.”
