Twenty-five-year-old moped driver killed over the bank holiday weekend has been named by police

A twenty-five-year-old man who was killed in a car accident over the bank holiday weekend in Merton has been named by police.

Marcos Mateus Alves, known as Mateus to his friends, who was born in Brazil, was pronounced dead around 5pm on Saturday in St Helier Avenue.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and have been released under investigation.

Detective Constable Chris May, of the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “The collision happened at a very busy location and at a busy time of day.

“I am sure there were a number of people who witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it.

“I would ask those people in the area or with dash cam footage to contact the police. Your information could be vital in helping us understand the cause of this tragic incident.”

Police were called just before 4.30pm on Saturday to reports of a car in collision with a moped close to Netley Gardens in Morden.

At this early stage, it is believed that two cars were travelling at speed prior to one of them being in collision with the moped.

Both drivers have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and enquiries continue.
