Woman charged over alleged inmate and officer sex video
A woman has been charged in relation to a social media video allegedly showing a member of prison staff having sex with an inmate in a jail cell.
Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, from Fulham, was charged on Saturday with misconduct in public office.
The Met launched an investigation launched June 28, after police were made aware of a video filmed inside HMP Wandsworth.
A woman was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office later that day.
Ms De Sousa Abreu is due to appear in custody at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court today.
HM Inspectorate of Prisons declined to comment due to the pre-election period.
In May, an “urgent notification” about conditions at HMP Wandsworth was issued by chief inspector of prisons Charlie Taylor.
It came after successive damning reports which described the prison as “overcrowded” and “inhumane”, with rising rates of violence amongst inmates.
In his report to Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, Mr Taylor said: “The poor outcomes we found at Wandsworth are systemic and cultural failures stemming from poor leadership at every level of the prison, from HMPPS (His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service) and the Ministry of Justice.”
The Victorian prison was built for about 950 men in 1851, but is currently home to more than 1,500 inmates.
During the period June 2022 to May 2023, the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) of HMP Wandsworth found the shortage of available staff “seriously undermined” the ability of the prison to function effectively.
Wandsworth was also the scene of an alleged escape by Daniel Khalife last year.
