AFC Wimbledon defeat Notts County to reach League Two play-off final at Wembley

AFC Wimbledon secured their place in the League Two play-off final with a 1-0 win over Notts County at Plough Lane today, completing a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Ryan Horbottle’s goal in the first leg had given the Dons the advantage and Josh Neufville’s superb strike in the return leg ensured their passage to Wembley.

The atmosphere inside Plough Lane was electric, with both sets of supporters creating a lively backdrop to a high-stakes occasion.

Notts County started brightly, showing attacking intent early on. Sam Austin and Jodi Jones both had efforts blocked by a resolute Wimbledon defence as the visitors looked to level the tie.

Despite that promising start from the away side, it was Wimbledon who struck first.

In the eighth minute, Joe Lewis picked out Neufville with a pinpoint pass. Neufville beat his marker and sent a sublime looping finish over Alex Bass to give the Dons the lead — a goal worthy of winning any tie, let alone a play-off semi-final.

To their credit, Notts County continued to press and retained plenty of possession, with their build-up play neat and composed. However, their cutting edge in the final third was lacking. Jones went close again with a strike from distance, but his shot flew over the crossbar.

Wimbledon had a golden chance to put the tie beyond doubt early in the second half when Marcus Browne latched on to Matty Stevens’ pass, but he was denied by a superb last-ditch tackle from Matty Platt to keep County’s hopes alive.

It wasn’t until the 62nd minute that County finally tested Alex Bass.

Unsurprisingly, it was Jones who forced the first save, striking from the edge of the box only to see his effort well held by the Wimbledon keeper.

Moments later, Jacob Bedeau found space in the area but failed to hit the target, wasting another opportunity.

At the other end, Stevens was denied by a brilliant low save from Bass, who also kept out a powerful strike from James Tilley shortly after. But the Dons held firm.

They now look ahead to a Wembley showdown with Walsall on June 26, where they wi’l aim to return to League One for the first time since their relegation three seasons ago.
