AFC Wimbledon ‘don’t realise how lucky they are’ to still have goalkeeping coach Ashley Bayes

Zaki Oualah believes AFC Wimbledon do not realise how lucky they are to have goalkeeper coach Ashley Bayes.

Bayes has been with the Dons since 2013 and has worked with the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, George Long and Kelle Roos.

Wimbledon’s current number two Nathan Broomerecently said that he trusts Bayes “with his life”.

Oualah trained with Bayes and the goalkeepers for seven years before earning a professional contract under Mark Robinson for the 2021-22 season.

The 27-year-old signed for National League South side Weymouth at the start of the month following his release last summer and is set to take on Johnnie Jackson’s side in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

“They’re so lucky to have him [Bayes],” Oualah told the South London Press. “I know everybody says it, but I don’t think they really realise how lucky they are to have him – not just as a goalkeeper coach, but also as a person and with the standards he sets and his daily habits. He’s vital for that club.

“I have said before that he should definitely be coaching somewhere higher, but everyone’s time will come when it’s ready.

“Cream always rises to the top, so I have no doubt that he will push on and coach some of the best goalkeepers in the country.”

Oualah spent last season as Nik Tzanev’s back-up and competition. He also trained with Broome following his arrival from Stoke City over the winter window.

“They’re both great keepers,” added Oualah. “They both work hard every single day and they’re both great professionals.

“They’re really young goalkeepers who can still both push on and play at a higher level.

“Most importantly, they’re both great lads.”

See Friday’s South London Press for an exclusive interview with Oualah about his time at Wimbledon and looking to cause a giant-killing with Weymouth this Saturday.
