Charlton midfielder’s exit came as a shock to AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson

AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson has admitted that he was surprised Alex Gilbey was allowed to leave Charlton on loan to join League Two side Stevenage.

Jackson managed Gilbey last season when he was boss of the Addicks and used him 34 times in all competitions and even handed the former Colchester and Wigan player the captaincy on a handful of occasions.

The 28-year-old midfielder joined Stevenage on a season-long loan as he was not in the plans of then Valley boss Ben Garner, sacked last week.

There is a January recall clause in Gilbey’s loan deal.

Wimbledon, unbeaten in their previous eight League Two outings, take on second-placed Stevenage tomorrow at Plough Lane.

Gilbey has played 20 times for Stevenage this season, scoring twice and recording three assists.

“He’s a player that I rate highly,” Jackson told the South London Press. “When he was playing for me, he was a mainstay in the team and was an important part of what I was doing.

“I was surprised that he was sent out. I knew what he would bring going into Stevenage, and I was a bit gutted because I knew he would have to come up against us.

“He has got huge qualities at this level that we have to be prepared for. I know what he’s about and will be able to brief my lads, but that is just one part of it.

“They have got a good side and have quality all around their team – Gilbey is a big part of that.”
