Chelsea Women boss Emma Hayes cool on GB Olympic job link

Emma Hayes has ruled herself out of managing the GB football team at this summer’s Olympics in Japan.

The Chelsea Women’s manager has been in the running to take the post, which was thrown open by the sudden resignation of England women’s coach Phil Neville, who was going to double up as the boss of the GB side.

Neville has taken charge of Inter Miami in Florida – the side owned by Neville’s former team-mate David Beckham.

Hayes was asked about the GB role after her side’s 3-0 drubbing of Arsenal in the WSL on Wednesday night.

She said: “There is nothing to comment on about it. I’m just thinking about Chelsea and nothing else. I’ve got a job to do here.”

The Blues are three points clear of Manchester United and five ahead of Manchester City, who have a fixture in hand. Pernille Harder and Fran Kirby scored the goals that disposed of Arsenal and it was the perfect performance after the Blues’ shock 2-1 defeat to Brighton, in the league on Sunday.

Hayes said: “Derby wins are great. But once we got the goal in the second half, there was only going to be one outcome.

“It was a brilliant defensive performance. Harder showed the dressing room her quality for her goals as did Fran Kirby.”

“Everyone knows what the standards are at Chelsea, the pressure and expectation is relentless.

“But it’s the place where the best can thrive and keep this dream machine flying.

“I’m not one who talks about brands or style of football, I believe in winning football matches.”

Hayes’s side are away to Bristol City on Sunday in the league.

Chelsea’s men side host Newcastle United on Monday night.
