Crystal Palace manager Vieira explains decisions to sub off Zaha, Doucoure and Edouard

Patrick Vieira has explained his second-half substitutions during Crystal Palace’s 0-0 draw at Leicester City.

Summer signing Cheick Doucoure was replaced by Luka Milivojevic. The 22-year-old Mali international Doucoure was issued a yellow card early in the second half for a foul on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Mitchell required treatment in the first half and had only come back into the starting line-up for this match after being ill in the build-up to the Leeds game last time out.

Jairo Riedewald, who was making his first appearance in the Premier League since the 2-3 defeat to West Ham last season, was Mitchell’s replacement.

Vieira also took off Wilfried Zaha and Odsonne Edouard midway through the second half, bringing on Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Frenchman Edouard was the only player to register a shot on target for the Eagles.

“It was just about trying to win the game,” said Vieira of his substitutions at the King Power. “You’re not happy with what the team is doing, so you try something different.

“I don’t want to go into details because we could spend all details here.”

Vieira also confirmed that Mitchell was not injured.

Vicente Guaita made six saves, three punches and successfully completed two claims during the 90 minutes.

“Vicente was solid,” said Vieira. “He defended crosses and set-pieces well.

“Defensively, we did enough not to concede that goal. But I wanted more from the team going forward, as we had the quality to create more.

“We had a couple of crosses where we didn’t have anybody available on the cut-back, and this is something that we will have to work on and improve.”
